Politics Imitating Sports

"Life imitating Art" is derived from an Oscar Wilde aphorism, "Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life." Let us hope that "Politics Imitating Sports" will be coined this year.

Background
Speaking at her Louisville, KY campaign headquarters, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., told a crowd of supporters Thursday that she is pulling for the filly, Eight Bells, for the 134th Kentucky Derby.

In selecting Eight Bells, Clinton picked the only girl horse in the race. Perhaps the most fitting move for the woman vying to be the nation's first woman elected president.

Sen. Clinton repeated her desire for the filly to be victorious – saying to a crowd in Jeffersonville, Indiana she was sending in her daughter to place her bets. "I hope that everybody will go to the derby on Saturday and place just a little money on the filly for me. I wont be able to be there this year – my daughter is going to be there and so she has strict instructions to bet on Eight Bells."

Pundits Open the Door
Chris Matthews on MSNBC's Hardball draws the comparison: "By the way, the track record on Eight Belles is that she's got stamina to go the distance. Hillary's track record these past two months is just as strong."

The Tragic Race Results
The filly Eight Belles finished second behind favorite Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, then collapsed with two broken front ankles and was euthanized after crossing the wire.

I Walk Through the Pundit's Door
Let's hope that Chris Matthews is an oracle and as he said "Hillary's track record these past two months is just as strong." She'll finish second to Obama, then after crossing the wire ..." A boy can dream.

That's great! Not that I want Hill Billy to be "put down" after the race, but her losing to Obama would be nice.
